Concord Holds Off Northwest Cabarrus in Four-Set Volleyball Battle

CONCORD, N.C. — Concord and Northwest Cabarrus traded momentum throughout a competitive Cabarrus County matchup Thursday night, but a late surge from the Spiders proved to be the difference as Concord secured a four-set victory.

Northwest Cabarrus found itself in an early hole in the opening set, falling behind 6–0 before battling back to draw even. Concord eventually regained control, building a 19–14 advantage that forced Northwest to call a timeout.

The Spiders maintained their momentum following the stoppage and closed out the opening set, 25–17, to take an early 1–0 advantage.

Concord carried that energy into the second set, opening the frame with a kill on the first possession. Northwest quickly answered with a run of its own and eventually built a 13–8 advantage, forcing Concord to use a timeout.

The two teams continued to battle point-for-point down the stretch, but Northwest Cabarrus was able to finish the set with a 25–23 victory and even the match at one set apiece.

The third set continued the back-and-forth nature of the match.

Neither team was able to create much separation, with Northwest holding a narrow 19–17 advantage late in the frame. Concord responded with a run of its own and eventually pulled ahead 23–21, forcing Northwest Cabarrus to call timeout.

Concord finished the set strong, taking it 25–22. A key block from No. 8 helped the Spiders secure the closing points and regain control of the match with a 2–1 advantage.

Northwest continued to battle in the fourth set.

Piper Martin provided a spark from the service line midway through the frame, stringing together several points and helping Northwest briefly move ahead by one.

Concord answered once again.

The Spiders put together a run to take a 19–17 advantage, forcing Northwest Cabarrus to call timeout in an attempt to regroup and extend the match.

Coming out of the timeout, Concord freshman No. 3 delivered one of the biggest stretches of the night.

The freshman recorded three consecutive kills, completely shifting the momentum in Concord’s favor and pushing the Spiders closer to the finish line. Northwest was unable to recover from the surge as Concord closed out the fourth set, 25–19, to secure the match in four sets.

The night featured extended rallies, timely defensive plays and several momentum swings between the two Cabarrus County programs. Northwest repeatedly responded when Concord appeared ready to pull away, but the Spiders were able to make the decisive plays late — highlighted by the freshman No. 3’s three-kill run that helped put the match away.
